Holger Mertin

Holger Maik Mertin (born May 14, 1977 in Olpe ) is a German sound actionist, multi- percussionist , sound artist and ethnomusicologist . He was a lecturer for percussion and sound semiotics at the Center for Contemporary Dance (ZZT) at the University of Music and Dance , Cologne.

Life

His studies in ethnomusicology, philosophy and sociology at the University of Frankfurt a. M., University of Cologne and University of Oriental and African Studies, London, he graduated in 2006 with a Magister Artium . During his studies, Holger Mertin worked for the jazz editorial team of the WDR radio and television programs (2000–2007); initially as a production assistant, later as a moderator and interviewer.

From 2010 to 2019 Mertin was a lecturer for “Practical Music Studies” at the University of Music and Dance Cologne Center for Contemporary Dance (ZZT).

He regularly writes his own column for the specialist magazine Sticks . In 2009 he founded the cross-genre cultural series Drums And More in Cologne's “Salon Freiraum”, in which he meets different artists in order to have an improvised dialogue with them. In addition to musicians, he was on stage with draftsmen, dancers, speakers and pantomime artists . Guests included Jaki Liebezeit (Can), the band AnnenMayKantereit , Milan Sladek (mime), Eberhard Kranemann (ex-Kraftwerk and Neu), Martin Sasse (Sting, Martin Sasse Trio), Hayden Chisholm , Paul Shigihara (WDR Big Band ), Roland Peil (Die Fantastischen Vier), Ali Haurand (European Jazz Ensemble).

In 2014 he played as an improvisation soloist with the Nuremberg Philharmonic State Orchestra under the direction of Gabor Kali. For the WDR 5 documentary production 14 Diaries of the First World War he composed the music score with the singer and specialist in medieval musical performance practice, Maria Jonas, and recorded all the parts and instruments himself.

In 2015 he released his first studio album on the staubgold label in cooperation with the drummer of the 60s / 70s cult band Can , Jaki Liebezeit .

Together with Justyna Niznik he appears in the duo Mertin-Niznik and develops multidimensional music and dance performances that merge classical violin with percussion. He offers workshops on the topics of “sound sphere” and “inter- and transdisciplinarity as a communication principle in the arts”.
