Athletic career

At the age of eight, Holger Stieglitz began to play organized soccer at the company sports association (BSG) Chemie Leipzig. From 1974 he played in the youth team of the BSG, in the 1975/76 season in the junior league played. The Stieglitz, which belongs to the team, played the majority of the point games, in which he was used for a long time as a left defender and in the second half of the season as a striker. As such, he also got his only goal in the junior league. His team could not hold their own there and was knocked off last. The 1.80 m tall Stieglitz played his first men's games in 1977/78 with the second chemistry team, which played in the third-class Leipzig district league . After he also belonged to the district league squad in 1978/79, he was able to play in the 1979/80 season with Chemie Leipzig in the GDR-wide youth league. There he was part of the team as a defender. He was then called up for military service in the National People's Army for 18 months .

From November 1981 he was used for the first time in the 1st team of Chemie Leipzig, which was represented at that time in the second-rate GDR league . By the end of the season, he played eleven of the twelve remaining point games and scored his first goals in the higher leagues. In 1982/83 he was part of the regular team as a midfielder, was absent only once in the 22 league games and won the relay with chemistry. In the subsequent league promotion round, he was involved in all eight encounters and thus had a considerable share in the promotion.

Chemie Leipzig was able to stay in the league for two seasons, Stieglitz, however, lost his regular place. Neither under coach Wolfgang Müller nor with Gerd Struppert he was used continuously, so that in 1983/84 and 1984/85 he only completed 14 of the 26 league games. In total, he was only 20 times in the starting line-up in changing positions and only played eight games over 90 minutes. In the two playoffs for relegation at the end of the 1983/84 season against tied goal 1. FC Union Berlin , he stood as a left midfielder in the relegation securing 2-1 second leg win.

After relegation in 1985, Stieglitz played three more seasons in the GDR league with BSG Chemie. Both 1985/86 and 1986/87 he secured a regular place in the league games, where he played in defense throughout the season, but was mainly used in the central midfield in 1986/87. In both seasons he was successful as a goalscorer. In the summer of 1987, Holger Stieglitz started his last season with the first team at Chemie Leipzig. He was only used on the 8th matchday and came to the 34th matchday only on 20 league games, where he was last only a substitute.

Although Stieglitz was still registered for the first team by BSG Chemie Leipzig for the 1988/89 season, he was no longer used there. Instead, he joined the district league team of Stahl Nordwest Leipzig as a recreational athlete .
