Holmes Island is a 2.5 km long island in the Biscoe Islands archipelago west of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located in the Grandidier Canal south of the Vieugué Island .
The island was mapped during the British Graham Land Expedition (1934-1937) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer John Rymill . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1959 after Brian Holmes (* 1932), geodesist of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey at Prospect Point in 1957, who also belonged to the Royal Navy's hydrographic surveying unit in the Biscoe Islands from 1957 to 1958 .
