Holstinghausen called Holsten ( Russian фон-Гольстинггаузен-Гольстен ) is the family name of a German-Baltic noble family , whose original aristocratic origin in the county of Mark (today the Ruhr and Lippe area ) is documented. In 1423 they were first documented in Old Livonia and in 1650 in the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia . From the beginning of the 17th century , they served as officers in the Lithuanian and Dutch armies . In 1775 they were granted Polish citizenship and were then mainly based in Panevėžys ( Lithuania ). Some family members later went to Poland and Germany .

Nobility

At the time of the redistribution of the Baltic provinces and the conclusion of the Peace of Nystad in 1721, the family was not recognized as belonging to the nobility in the Baltic States . It was not until 1798 and in the years 1840 to 1854 that they were included in the registers of the Kaunas governorate . In 1841 they were also enrolled in the nobility registers of the Courland Knighthood . The ruling senate of the Russian Empire confirmed the title of baron in 1853 and again in 1862 .
