geography
The Holzbach rises south of Westerholt at an altitude of 72 m above sea level. NN . Initially, the stream flows in northeastern directions. After about 300 m of the river, the stream flows through the pigeon pond on the southern outskirts of Westerholt. Then the Holzbach turns in a wide arc to the southeast. After about another kilometer of the river, the stream reaches Resse , which it flows around on the eastern edge of the village.
In the south-east of Resse the Holzbach crosses under the Federal Motorway 2 . Here the water of the Resser Bach (6.0 km, 13.27 km²), the Holzbach has up to this point 12.12 km², a brook that originated in the eastern Herten district of Disteln , flows into it from the left. The Resser Bach used to be an independent tributary of the Emscher, which, paralleling the Holzbach to the east, ran roughly along the city limits from Herten to Recklinghausen to the east. But it has now been diverted around the Hoheward dump north to the west, to the Holzbach. Its former lower course is called Schellenbruchgraben .
In its estuary, the Holzbach now flows primarily in southerly directions and then flows northwest of Unser Fritz at 39 m above sea level. NN on the right into the Emscher .
With a height difference of 33 meters, the mean bottom slope of the Holzbach is 4.5 ‰. The 30.25 km² catchment area is drained to the North Sea via the Emscher and Rhine .
