The Lüdenscheid city master builder Falkenroth made the plans for the building erected in 1894. The building owner was the Lüdenscheid department of the Sauerland Mountain Association (SGV) , which was only founded in 1891 . In addition to Homert, Berg Höh , which is closer to the city, was initially discussed as a location, but a vote was taken on the location that would ultimately be built on.
The Homert Tower initially had a representative appearance and had stylistic elements of historicism . Red sandstone was used for decorative elements , which has no occurrence in the immediate vicinity and required expensive transport. In the 1960s, the tower was clad with asbestos concrete slabs, which still determine its appearance today.
The viewing gallery offers a panoramic view of the Märkische Sauerland and into the Bergisches Land in the west. In the south, the Ebbegebirge limits the panorama, while the Versetalsperre and the federal highway 45 are in the immediate vicinity .
The Homert Tower is still maintained by the Sauerland Mountain Association.
