Homestead is a city in Allegheny County in the state of Pennsylvania in southeast Pittsburgh .
history
The city was founded in 1880. According to the 2000 census, the city had 3,569 inhabitants, while 19,041 people were still living in the city in 1940. Homestead was best known for a steel mill founded there in 1881, which was bought by Andrew Carnegie in 1883 and in which the legendary Homestead strike occurred in July 1892 , as well as the related bloody clashes between the strikers and Carnegie's manager Henry Clay Frick hired Pinkerton detectives .
