The Clare Hugo Stinnes 1 was a German cargo - motor ship . It was built in 1935 by the Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft and delivered to the Hugo Stinnes GmbH branch in Hamburg.

On August 29, 1939, a few days before the start of the Second World War , the Clare Hugo Stinnes 1, loaded with 7337 tons of wheat, left Las Palmas de Gran Canaria , disguised as the Soviet freighter Kirov . The ship reached the Norwegian coast on September 9, 1939 , where it hit the bottom in the Galfjord due to a pilot's error . The damaged ship was aground on September 10, 1939 near Aasnäs in the Raffjord to prevent a total loss. On September 21, 1939, the freighter ran to Drontheim for repairs. The charge was unloaded on October 6, 1939.

On April 12, 1940, the Clare Hugo Stinnes 1 was interned in Ulvik , placed under Norwegian control and then used as a barge for British officers. On April 24, 1940, the German minesweeper M 1 under Lieutenant Hans Bartels discovered the freighter hidden in the Hardangerfjord . The Clare Hugo Stinnes 1 was boarded and manned by a civilian German crew on April 25th.

The ship, which was put back into motion, was attacked and damaged by the British submarine Trident off the Björnfjord with fire from the deck gun on May 2, 1940 after two torpedoes had missed their target, and the ship was hit by its crew on the island of Skorpa set on the ground. Another torpedo exploded on the rocks, and the submarine's commander, Lieutenant Commander Sladen, who judged the ship to be a total loss, called off the attack in order to get his own boat to safety. The Clare Hugo Stinnes 1 , however, was towed to Bergen and later repaired in Gothenburg .
