The Lantian man ( Homo erectus lantianensis ) (Chin. Lántián yuánrén 蓝田 猿人), also known as the “erect Lantian man” (Chin. Lántián zhílìrén 蓝田 直立 人), “Lantian man” (Chin. Lántián rén 蓝田 人) , was initially named Sinanthropus lantianensis (Chin. Lántián Zhōngguó yuánrén 蓝田 中国 zunächst), but later assigned to Homo erectus .
In 1963 and 1964, in the villages of Chenjiawo (陈家und ; Chenjiawo Site ) and Gongwangling (公 王 岭; Gongwangling Site ) in Lantian County, Shaanxi Province , China , a fossilized skullcap, upper and lower jaw and three Teeth of a prehistoric man discovered along with stone tools and animal fossils.
There are several, very different dates for the Lantian man. According to a paleomagnetic dating it is said to be 650,000 to 500,000 years old, a biostratigraphic dating, however, suggested only 300,000 years.
The characteristics show that the Lantian man compared to the Peking man ( Homo erectus pekinensis ; Chin. Běijīng yuánrén) and Java man (Chin. Zhǎowārén) had more original characteristics.
The Gongwangling site and the Chenjiawo site have been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (2-47) since 1982 .
