The Honda HA-420 HondaJet is a twin-engine business jet for five passengers. It is the first production aircraft developed and built by the Honda Aircraft Company .
history
In the late 1980s, Honda began developing a small business jet that would be powered by third-party jet engines . The prototype, the Honda MH02 , was built as an experimental aircraft around 1990 in collaboration with Mississippi State University . This development resulted in the construction of our own small turbofan engine , the GE Honda HF120 from 1999. The engine, a joint development with GE Aviation , was used for test purposes in a Cessna Citation and a converted Boeing 727-100 , later also in a Lockheed T-33 Built-in shooting star. The jet is produced in Greensboro, North Carolina , at the Piedmont Triad International Airport .
The HondaJet made its maiden flight on December 3, 2003 at Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro and was first presented to the public in July 2005 at the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in Oshkosh, Wisconsin .
In August 2006, Honda and Piper Aircraft announced a joint marketing of the HondaJet. On September 2, 2007, the Japanese company announced that the production and headquarters of the new subsidiary will be located at Greensboro Airport. In mid-2008, the Honda Team Formula 1 driver Jenson Button announced that he wanted to get into business aviation and ordered two HondaJets.
On December 20, 2010, the first near-production HondaJet took off on a 51-minute maiden flight from Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro. With this flight, the certification by the US American aviation authority FAA began . A third prototype was under construction at the time and took part in the certification process from mid-2011.
Honda announced it had just over 100 orders for the jet, with first deliveries planned for 2012. The selling price was expected to 4.5 million US dollars . An annual production of 70 to 100 pieces was planned. Due to design problems with the engine, delivery was expected in mid-2013 in October 2011. In May 2013, Honda announced that it would postpone certification until the end of 2014 due to further tests with the engines. According to a press release from the manufacturer on June 27, 2014, the first series-produced machine successfully completed its maiden flight on the same day. The approval by the American aviation authority FAA took place in December 2015.
The first customer and operator in Europe is the Geestland- based charter company Privateways. The jet is stationed in Nordholz .
In May 2018, Honda announced the introduction of the "HondaJet Elite" model, which has a 17% increased range of now 2661 km and additional noise insulation.

The developers opted for an unusual arrangement of the engines above the wings, a configuration known from the Fokker VFW-614 . On the one hand, this enables the design as a low- wing aircraft , with advantages for the cabin cross-section for a given fuselage diameter. On the other hand, in comparison to engines attached to the fuselage, engine noise and vibrations in the cabin are to be reduced. According to Honda, the aerodynamics should also be improved, which should lead to fuel savings. The aircraft fuselage consists of lightweight composite materials and is manufactured and assembled in two individual parts by GKN Aerospace in Alabama . As with some fighter aircraft, the upper sides of the wings are precision-milled from aluminum and light metal alloy and contain both the load-bearing structure and the integral tanks. At the same time, the high surface quality required to achieve a low-resistance laminar air flow is to be achieved, which would not be achievable with the traditional wing construction made of sheet metal and separate load-bearing spars. The underside of the wings, however, consists of aluminum light metal sheets. The manufacturer hopes that the combination of lightweight materials, aerodynamic design and efficient drives will make it 30 to 35 percent more economical than comparable models. The aircraft is equipped with a Garmin G3000 glass cockpit system in the cockpit and with intelligent glass in the passenger area .
