Hong Sung-won (born December 26, 1937 in Hapcheon , Gyeongsangnam-do , † May 1, 2008 in Gimpo , Gyeonggi-do ) was a South Korean writer .

Life

Hong Sung-won was born in Hapcheon County in 1937, the oldest of eight children. In 1940 he moved with his family to North Korea, where they lived until it was liberated from Japanese colonial rule . The family then settled in Seoul . In 1956, Hong began studying English at Korea University , but had to drop out due to financial reasons.

Shortly after the military coup by Park Chung-hee in 1961, he had to do three years of military service. The three years he spent at Gangwon-do Military Base greatly influenced his work. In 1964, Hong became known as a writer by winning three different writing competitions in a row. His experiences as a teenager in the Korean War and later as a soldier were the focus of his early works. Later he dealt among other things with the difficulties of city life and dealt with recent history.

On May 1, 2008, at the age of 71, he died in Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province, as a result of a chronic illness.
