Life

Honorat Cotteli 2006

Honorat Cotteli spent his early youth in his hometown of Banska Bystrica . At the age of six (1948) he received his first violin lessons. Soon his talent and musicality were noticed. At the age of 14 he moved to Brno and began studying violin at the local conservatory, which he graduated from in 1960 in Bratislava . A year before he graduated, he became a member of the Bratislava Radio Orchestra and music editor for the Czechoslovak radio . Soon thereafter, he joined the Slovak Philharmonic . From 1964 he also worked as concertmaster at the State Opera Banska Bystrica.

In 1967 Cotteli was able to leave the then communist Slovakia and move to Switzerland. He joined the orchestra of the St. Gallen City Theater as a violinist and was entrusted with the position of concert master two years later. With his Cotteli quartet (1st violin Honorat Cotteli, 2nd violin Miloslav Kopecky, viola Oskar Menzel, violoncello Conrad Schmid) he was active as a chamber musician and soloist.

In 1970 Cotteli became a member of the Zurich Opera Orchestra and moved to Spreitenbach not far from Zurich. Under the direction of Räto Tschupp he became a member of the Camerata Zurich . In 1976 he was appointed violin teacher at the Zurich Conservatory ( Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK). From 1970 onwards, the focus of his musical work falls in Switzerland. From 1986 his interest and his musical creation shifted more and more to the composition of his own works. His last composition, Trais , was composed in 2013, the year before his death.

Compositional creation

Cotteli's compositional work began in 1986. About 80 works were created for a wide variety of instrumentations. In 1996, the year of Slovak music, two of his works were awarded at the composition competition: Four Bagatelles for solo string instrument, composed in 1991 and Trio Burlesco for string trio , composed in 1994. His tonal language is characterized by an expanded tonality. Rhythms and themes from the folk music of his Slovak homeland flowed into it. Honorat Cotteli entrusted all of the material for his compositions to the Zurich Central Library in 2013 .
