Horace Hood
Horace Lambert Alexander Hood KCB , MVO (born October 2, 1870 in London - † May 31, 1916 at sea ) was a Rear Admiral in the British Royal Navy .
Life
Hood was the younger son of the 4th Viscount Hood, a descendant of the famous Admiral Samuel Hood, 1st Viscount Hood .
He joined the Royal Navy in 1883 and served on HMS Temeraire and HMS Hyacinth . During the Samoan Hurricane in 1889, he served as a midshipman on HMS Calliope .
At the beginning of the First World War he commanded an association of monitors in the English Channel for coastal bombardment on the German-occupied Belgian coast. He then commanded the 3 rd Battle cruiser squadron (3 battlecruiser squadron ) by Sir John Jellicoes Grand Fleet . He died on board his flagship HMS Invincible when it exploded during the Battle of the Skagerrak . Only six men of the crew could be saved.
Hood was posthumously appointed Knight Commander of the Order of Bath (KCB). After the childless death of his brother, the 5th Viscount Hood , his title of nobility passed to his two sons and their descendants. The Antarctic Hood Glacier is named after Horace Hood .
