The Horch 901 was a medium-sized off-road standard car for the Wehrmacht , which was developed in 1935/36 according to specifications from the Army Ordnance Office with independent suspension and all-wheel drive at the Auto Union's Horch plant in Zwickau . Between 1937 and 1943 Horch delivered 14,911 vehicles equipped with two different eight-cylinder V-engines : initially the 80 hp (59 kW) version with 3.5 liter displacement from the civilian car type Horch 830/930 ; later cars had a 3.8 liter engine with 90 hp (66 kW).
During the same period, the Siegmar (formerly Wanderer ) plant, which is also part of the Auto Union Group, produced around 16,000 vehicles as Wanderer 901s with Horch V8 engines and Opel Blitz six-cylinder in- line engines of 75 hp (55 kW). As a license- which provided Opel factory Brandenburg her-car unit Opel with six-cylinder engines from 1938 to 1943 at least 3,860 medium-duty.
Outside in the middle, a spare wheel was attached on both sides, which served as a support wheel or axle when driving over small hills and earthen walls. From 1940 onwards this was abandoned; only one spare wheel was stowed in the trunk of the "Type 40", which offered more space in the interior. In favor of the more versatile Mercedes-Benz L 1500 S / A and Steyr 1500 A , which also had a higher payload, the production of medium-weight standard cars was discontinued in 1943.
