The P2M is an all -terrain vehicle ( SUV ) that was manufactured in the GDR for military use.

The P2M is the successor to the IFA P1 , which was developed in the Chemnitz Research and Development Plant (FEW).

development

Due to new requirements (buoyancy, which was implemented in the P2S variant ), only the body could be partially taken over from the predecessor. The rest of the chassis had to be completely redesigned. The dimensions were roughly the same as the predecessor. The first driving tests were just in the early stages when the development was stopped by the client due to the political unrest in 1953. However, due to the CIP's need for such a vehicle, development was resumed after negotiations - the resulting delay put a heavy strain on the project due to the loss of time. Furthermore, only limited financial resources were available. This impaired the tests. After the dissolution of the FEW in 1955, engine development was continued in the HORCH Zwickau car plant . Due to the problematic development of critical chassis and engine assemblies, the test vehicles could not be equipped with modified components. The vehicle was essentially designed for the transport of people and the possibility of producing further expansion variants was limited. In order to solve this problem, the development of an all-metal bed structure began. After the production of at least 2061 models, however, production was stopped to make room for small car production at Sachsenring Zwickau . At the end of 1964 there were still 1,066 vehicles with the force - the segregation had already started.

commitment

The P2M off-road vehicle was mainly intended for military and police use, but was also used by the fire brigade, which was part of the German People's Police and one of the armed organs of the GDR. Vehicles of this type are still in use today by some volunteer fire brigades in the former GDR.
