biography

In a public bathhouse , Horiyoshi III became aware of a yakuza with a full-body tattoo. Inspired by this encounter, he began an apprenticeship with the tattoo artist Horiyoshi I - Yoshitsugu Muramatsu, who awarded him the master's title in 1979 after an eight-year apprenticeship. Nakano worked by hand with the traditional Japanese Tebori stick until the mid-1980s . Through his friendship with Don Ed Hardy , he began using electric tattoo machines . His motifs focused on the classical repertoire of traditional Japanese narratives and versions, including peonies , koi and dragons , to keep the tradition alive.

In 2000 Horiyoshi III founded the "Tattoo Museum" in Yokohama near the main train station, which is run by his wife Mayumi Nakano.

Among his published works are sketchbooks such as 36 Ghosts , 108 Heroes of the Suikoden , 100 Demons , 58 Musha , The Namakubi (a collection of drawings of severed heads, published by Nihon Shuppansha), as well as Ryushin , Kokoro , Osen 1 and Osen 2 , published by Kofuu-Senju Publications Ltd. between 2010 and 2015. (now Kosei Publications Ltd.).

successor

Horiyoshi III's successor will be his son Kazuyoshi Nakano. He bears the name Sōryō (heir) until he is named Horiyoshi IV after successfully completing his training. Horiyoshi III had some disciples, but none of them are members of his family anymore. The German Alexander Horikitsune Reinke stayed the longest at 17 and has been going separate ways since 2015.
