Horst Bleckmann

Horst Bleckmann (born November 2, 1948 in Rietberg ) is a German zoologist and neurobiologist. Since 1994 he has been Professor of Zoology and Comparative Neurobiology at the Institute of Zoology at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn .

Life

Bleckmann studied biology (diploma) and biology / chemistry (higher teaching degree) at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen , where he received his doctorate in biology from 1977 to 1979. At the same time, Bleckmann worked as a freelancer at the Institute for Biology Didactics . As a member of the Collaborative Research Center “Comparative Neurobiology of Behavior”, after completing his doctorate, he worked from 1981 to 1984 as a research assistant at the Zoological Institute of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . Bleckmann completed his habilitation in 1986 in the field of zoology from the department of biology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt. From 1985 to 1992 Bleckmann worked as a visiting scholar at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography , San Diego, California. On behalf of H. Scheich, Bleckmann held the chair for neurophysiology at the Technical University of Darmstadt from 1992 to 1994 . In 1994 he followed the call to Bonn and has since been Professor of Zoology and Comparative Neurobiology at the Rheinische-Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. Bleckmann has been an elected reviewer for the German Research Foundation (DFG) since 2004 and was a member of the scientific advisory board of the Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig from 2005 to 2009 .

Act

At the interface between biophysics and sensory ecology, Bleckmann set decisive impulses in neuro, sensory and behavioral physiology with his work. He is particularly distinguished by his variety of methods, and the list of animals he has worked with is long. Among other things, he investigates the infrared sense of beetles and snakes, the memory and learning abilities of cartilage and bony fish, the locomotion of chameleons and the flight of the peregrine falcon. However, the research of hydrodynamic sensors of aquatic organisms in general, and the lateral line system of fish in particular, runs like a red thread through his life's work. Some of the findings of his research flow into the development of bionic sensors and underline the application focus of his work.
