Horst Gorski

Horst Gorski (* 1957 in Hamburg ) is a German Lutheran theologian . Since September 2015 he has been head of the office of the VELKD and vice-president in the church office of the EKD .

Life

Gorski studied Protestant theology and received his doctorate in this subject. After working as a parish pastor, he became provost in the Hamburg church district Altona and since 2009 in the merged church district Hamburg-West / Südholstein . Since 2004 he has also been chairman of the Theological Advisory Council of the North Elbian Church and later of the Theological Chamber of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Germany . When he was elected bishop in Schleswig in 2008, he was defeated by Gerhard Ulrich . In May 2015, Gorski became head of the office of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Germany ( VELKD) and Vice President in the Church Office of the Evangelical Church in Germany ( EKD ). On September 1, 2015, he succeeded Friedrich Hauschildt , who held both positions. Gorski acknowledges his homosexuality and is a co-founder of the convention of gay pastors in northern Elbe. He lives in Hamburg.

criticism

Gorski evoked indignation, mainly from conservative church circles, with his sermon on Good Friday, April 14, 2006, in which a. explained: "The death of Jesus was not necessary for God to be reconciled with us and to forgive us." While the North Elbe Evangelical Church unreservedly supported Gorski on the occasion of Gorski's candidacy for bishopric in 2008, its former bishop Ulrich Wilckens called for him not to be elected because he had "publicly said goodbye to the central message of the Gospel". In 2015, seven leaders of Confessing Communities and Wilckens asked Gorski in an open letter to publicly distance himself from his earlier statements on the theology of the cross before taking up his leading offices at the VELKD and the EKD. The senders were dissatisfied with his reply.
