Horst Grosse's place of work

Horst Grosse (born September 18, 1920 in Altenburg ; † September 30, 2001 there ) was a German museologist, ornithologist and conservationist.

Life

Horst Grosse was the son of the Altenburg master hairdresser Artur Grosse. He grew up in Altenburg, where he graduated from high school in 1939. He then worked as a laboratory technician in the Rositz tar processing plant until October 1940 before he was enlisted for military service in the Wehrmacht. He fell into French captivity, where he was used in the coal mining industry. He was dismissed as unable to work in June 1951 and returned to Altenburg, the GDR founded in 1949.

Without a trained profession, it was difficult for Horst Grosse to gain a foothold. He got a job in the House of Young Pioneers in Altenburg, before he was entrusted with the full-time management of the natural history museum Mauritianum in Altenburg on May 1, 1954 at the suggestion of Ernst Kirste by the council of the Altenburg district . He also owes this to the fame of his father, who had earned services as an active member of the cultural association for democratic renewal and as a district nature conservation officer and who introduced his son Horst to natural history and biological-ecological topics at an early stage.

In 1955, Horst Grosse began a distance learning course in museology in Köthen and Weißenfels , which he completed in 1959.

On January 1, 1970, he took over the role of nature conservation officer for the Altenburg district from his father . He held this office until 1982. Furthermore, he was a member of the district nature conservation in the Leipzig district . In 1964 he started research on small mammals in Altenburger Land .

His publications include so-called "speaking books" under the title Birds of Our Home , which were published in 1958 and 1965 by Zentralverlag für Blinde. He also participated in the two books Flora von Altenburg (1969) and Das Altenburger Land (1973).

In 1962 he published the articles on local history. However, this series was not continued. From 1958, however, the treatises and reports of the natural history museum 'Mauritianum' Altenburg (later briefly: Mauritiana ) appeared at regular intervals .

In 1985 he retired as museum director at the age of 65. After 1989 he withdrew completely from social life and died in 2001 in the Altenburg district of Kosma .
