Horst Häupl (born August 21, 1931 in Leubnitz ; † June 21, 2020 in Leipzig ) was a German composer and music school director.

Life

Häupl was born in Leubnitz near Werdau in 1931 as the son of a music teacher. Early on he learned several instruments (violin, piano and accordion) with a private music teacher in Zwickau . In 1947 he entered the newly founded Robert Schumann Academy there. He finished his training in 1953 when he graduated from college as an orchestral musician (major viola, compulsory piano, minor trombone). In addition, he also enjoyed training in harmony, composition and form. Together with the Oberlungwitz teacher Conrad Schlegel, he led the establishment of a music school in Hohenstein-Ernstthal in 1953 , which was attended by 150 music students in the year it was founded. This headed Häupl until 1991. In 1958/59 he qualified as a music teacher at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden . He taught violin, viola, music theory and community music. He also directed the Hohenstein-Ernstthal youth wind orchestra, the Bernsdorf wind orchestra from 1965 and the company wind orchestra of the VEB Elektromotorenwerk Grünhain from 1967 to 1988 . He also played the viola in the State Vogtland Orchestra in Reichenbach and on the stages of the city of Zwickau.

For the orchestra he directed, Häupl arranged and composed around 80 pieces of music. In addition to works for wind orchestra, plucked instruments and strings, these are mainly marches. Some of these were published by Friedrich Hofmeister Musikverlag .

Häupl died in June 2020 at the age of 88 in a hospice in Leipzig.
