Athletic career

At the company sports community (BSG) Chemie Zeitz, Horst Kunze came to his first league games in the GDR-wide game operation in the 1974/75 season . In the second-rate GDR league , he was used in ten matches and scored his first goal in higher-class football. In the 1975/76 season he made 16 league appearances by April 1976, after which he began a three-year service in the National People's Army in May . During this time he was able to continue playing football in the GDR league with the Army Sports Association (ASG) Vorwärts Plauen . Within three seasons he made 47 appearances in 64 league games and was successful with four goals. After his discharge from the army, Kunze returned to Chemie Zeitz for the 1978/79 season. There he played 32 times in the GDR league by the end of the 1979/80 season and scored five goals.

In the summer of 1980 Kunze joined the league promoted Chemie Böhlen. As a striker, he was used in all 26 league games, but only scored one goal. After only one year, Böhlen had to relegate from the league again. In the immediate resurgence, Kunze was involved in 17 of 22 GDR league games and in all eight promotion games with one goal. In his second league season 1982/83 Kunze had several failures and could only be called up in sixteen point games, where he again scored his mandatory goal. In 1983, Chemie Böhlen also failed to stay in the league. Both 1984 and 1985 re-emergence was missed. In 1983/84 Kunze was missing in only one of the 22 league games, in the first half of the 1984/85 season he played all 17 point games, in both seasons he scored three goals.

From February 1985 Kunze played for the first division club 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig , where he should replace the long-term midfielder Matthias Lindner . Kunze was used in his position in all eleven league games until the end of the season, scored one goal, but only played three games over the full distance. After Lindner was operational again for the 1985/86 season, the Leipzig club no longer had any use for Kunze. He still had a short assignment on matchday three, after which he returned to Chemie Böhlen.

In Bohlen, Kunze played 15 GDR league games in the 1985/86 season, in which he scored the most goals of the season of his career with five goals. In the following three seasons he was a regular player with 82 league games in a total of 102 point games. At the age of 32, Kunze completed his last season in high-class football. He ended his career after 15 seasons with 54 league games (three goals) and 241 GDR league games (29 goals).
