Horst Schmidt (born October 26, 1924 ) is a former German soccer goalkeeper. With the ZSG Union Halle he became Eastern Zone Master in 1949 .

Athletic career

When the soccer department of SG Freiimfelde Halle switched to the Central Sports Community Union Halle in April 1949, the 24-year-old goalkeeper Horst Schmidt replaced the previous Freiimfeld goalkeeper Grimm at ZSG. Until then, Schmidt had played for the lower-class company sports community (BSG) Traktor in Zappendorf , twelve kilometers from Halle. Although not yet eligible to play for the ZSG, Schmidt was used in the three finals of the Eastern Zone Championship in 1949 . Protests from the other final teams were ignored. On June 26, 1949, the ZSG Union Halle in Dresden's Heinz-Steyer Stadium with Horst Schmidt in the gate won the final of the Eastern Zone Championship 4-1 over Fortuna Erfurt .

Union Halle had thus also qualified for the first season of the newly founded East Zone League , later the GDR Oberliga . The ZSG Union squad again included Horst Schmidt as a regular goalkeeper. He was consequently used from the beginning of the point games and was regularly in the goal of Halle until the eleventh game day. From the 12th matchday on, Schmidt was no longer used in the ZSG team, the GDR press remained silent about the reasons . For the rest of the season he was replaced by Arthur Richter, who was already 30 years old . Horst Schmidt did not appear in higher-class football even later.
