Horst Schubert (journalist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Horst Schubert (* 1922 in Breslau ; † December 24, 2008 in Cologne ) was a German journalist and author. From 1960 to 1985 he was head of the Cologne local editorial team at the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger . His daily gloss was known in this newspaper under the pseudonym "Colonius", which appeared almost 11,000 times between 1960 and 2008.

Life

After childhood and youth in Breslau, Schubert studied economics . In the Second World War , for which he was drafted as a soldier in 1942, he was taken prisoner by the French. Released in 1948, he followed his mother, who had been driven out of Breslau, to Cologne, where he initially worked as a freelance journalist for several newspapers. He worked for four years in the editorial office of the NRZ , after which he switched to the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger in 1956. From 1960 to 1985 Schubert headed the Cologne local editorial office there.

Colonius

In the early 1960s, Alfred Neven DuMont was looking for a successor to the column by the journalist Charly Zöller , which he wrote under the pseudonym "Carolus". Schubert took over this job as "Colonius" and published the gloss of the same name over a period of 48 years, even after reaching retirement age, in the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger. Recognized the most-column was set "Colonius" to a border, italics and the large, curving signature "Colonius" at the end of the text. The texts were rarely illustrated when there was a direct reference to the subject matter depicted. During the first seven years, Schubert's colleagues occasionally wrote the column when he was on vacation. The texts were devoted to everyday topics, often with a local reference, with Colonius acting as a "gentle, precise observer, as a chatterer, advisor, patient explainer and commentator, never completely serious and never without meaning". Schubert did not reveal the name behind "Colonius" until 1981.

In 1996 the book Colonius - A Cologne Voice was published in the series “Gelebtes Köln” , in which 300 selected glosses were republished.

"Colonius" also answered readers' mail and in this connection had extensive correspondence.

His last gloss was published on Christmas Eve 2008. On the same day, Horst Schubert died at the age of 86 in Cologne-Porz , where he lived for many years.
