career

Amateur, until 1958

Horst Zimmermann played with TuRU Düsseldorf in the 1957/58 round of the Niederrhein Association. His achievements brought the talented defender appointments to the association selection of the Lower Rhine. Together with Matthias Mauritz , he formed the defender couple in the final of the 1958 regional cup against Lower Saxony. In Hanover, the Lower Rhine prevailed with 2-0 goals against the hosts. In May 1958, the German national soccer team played two international matches. In both encounters - Horst Zimmermann was 19 years old - the young man from Düsseldorf was used. On May 4th he made his debut in Le Mans against France alongside the Karlsruhe defender Dieter Klaußner , and three days later the second international match against Curacao took place in Gelsenkirchen. For the round 1958/59 he signed a contract with Fortuna Düsseldorf for the Oberliga West.

Fortuna Düsseldorf, 1958 to 1964

Zimmermann's first appearance with the Fortuna Düsseldorf contract team in the Oberliga West was in the away game on November 23, 1958 against Rot-Weiß Oberhausen. In the 0-0 draw, he formed the defenders pair with Werner Vigna . Since there were other outstanding defenders in the Fortuna squad through Erich Juskowiak and Matthias Mauritz, TuRU's newcomer only made nine appearances in his first season. In addition, Fortuna played an excellent round and took third place. The crash the next round was almost sensational: In 1959/60 Düsseldorf, with the regular player in defense Zimmermann, rose from the league. Immediately succeeded in 1960/61 as runner-up in the 2nd division, the immediate return to the West German upper house. Zimmermann had completed 16 games in the 2nd division under coach Fritz Pliska and Hermann Straschitz scored the most goals of the runner-up and league return with 21 goals. Now there were new names at Zimmermann's side: Hans-Josef Hellingrath , Manfred Krafft , Peter Meyer , Hermann Straschitz and the returnees took ninth place in 1961/62. In August 1962, the 1962 DFB Cup was played. After successes against Sportfreunde Lebenstedt, 1. FC Saarbrücken (in the replay) and in the semifinals against Schalke 04, Fortuna Düsseldorf moved into the final on August 29, 1962 with the final triangle Albert Görtz (goalkeeper) and Werner Vigna and Horst Zimmermann (defender) Hanover against 1. FC Nürnberg . The "club" prevailed in extra time with 2: 1 goals. Overall, Zimmermann played 69 games in the league from 1958 to 1963 and scored one goal.

In the first year Regionalliga West , 1963/64, coach Kuno Klötzer brought him to thirteen missions alongside defender competitors Hellingrath, Karl Hoffmann and Hans Klessa. Fortuna took third place and in the summer of 1964 Horst Zimmermann ended his career as a contract player.
