The Horton River is a river in the northwest of the Australian state of New South Wales .

geography

The river drains most of the northern slopes of the Nandewar Range . Its source is east of Mount Kaputar National Park and northwest of the city of Barraba . From there it flows north through the small towns of Upper Horton and Caroda and flows into the Gwydir River between Bingara and Gravesend .

The river valley is used for growing grain and for raising livestock. It is very sparsely populated and there are no larger cities on the river. The dirt road from Narrabri to Bingara crosses the valley.
