A hospital foundation is a foundation whose purpose is to establish and operate a hospital or hospital, usually in connection with a hospital church . The oldest hospital foundation in Germany is in Wemding and is still used as a nursing home today.

history

The majority of the hospital foundations that still exist today were established in the Middle Ages . In addition to the monastic hospitals and those of the hospital orders such as the Order of St. John , fraternally organized hospitals developed in the growing cities in particular from the beginning of the 12th century. These were often donated by noblemen or wealthy citizens who wanted to secure eternal salvation after their death.

Dedications

Hospital foundations were particularly often dedicated to the Holy Spirit in the 13th century , but saints, such as Saint Catherine , were also used as patrons. The Catherine Hospitals in Regensburg , Bamberg and Forchheim are examples of hospital foundations from this tradition that still exist today. Hospital foundations for the Holy Spirit with a still existing Heilig-Geist-Spital exist in the Bavarian cities of Kaufbeuren , Landsberg am Lech , Freising , Eichstätt or Landshut .

Not all hospital foundations and Heilig Geist hospitals have retained their original purpose to the present day.

meaning

Most hospital foundations developed over the centuries into significant landowners in their cities and their surrounding areas. With the ownership of the land, the foundations often acquired sovereign rights such as blood jurisdiction . Some hospital foundations have been able to maintain their sometimes extensive property up to the present day. For example, the Hospital Foundation for the Holy Spirit in Kaufbeuren has over 500 hectares of forest. The Würzburg Hospital Foundation for the Holy Spirit has its own winery. Many hospital foundations still operate social institutions such as old people's and nursing homes , hospitals and senior centers. One example of this is the Hof Hospital Foundation.
