history

Managua

The building was designed in 1969 by the American architect Neal Prince (born 1921) analogous to a Mayan temple pyramid. The hotel is located at the foot of La Loma Hill with a direct view of Lake Managua. Until the earthquake on December 23, 1972, which practically completely destroyed the old town of Managua, the hotel was connected directly to the center of the capital. Since the old center was not rebuilt afterwards, the hotel was a bit isolated afterwards, but was still close to the main government offices and the main post office.

The most prominent guest was the US billionaire Howard Hughes , who lived in the hotel for several months until the earthquake. Hughes had rented the entire 7th floor, including the Presidential Suite (now the Darío Suite, named after Rubén Darío ) for himself and parts of the 6th and 8th floors for his employees. Hughes left Nicaragua immediately after the earthquake. The building was apparently only slightly damaged by the quake.

During the Nicaraguan Revolution of 1978/79, the Interconti was the headquarters of the international press, as it had excellent communication facilities and was also in close proximity to the most important government buildings. The hotel retained this function virtually throughout the entire Contra War in the 1980s. On February 16, 1991, the former military leader of the Contras , Enrique Bermúdez , was shot dead in the parking lot in front of the hotel after he had previously stayed at the hotel; the fact has not been resolved to date (2014).

Trivia

Both Roger Spottiswoode's feature film Under Fire (USA 1983) and the Malko novel Waffen für Nicaragua by Gérard de Villiers ( Hamburg 1980, French original edition Croisade à Nicaragua , Paris 1980, Spanish edition Cruzada en Nicaragua , Barcelona 1980) partly play in the Interconti. Since Under Fire was filmed in Mexico , a hotel there served as a prop .
