The Hotel zum Desenberg was a baroque building built in the 18th century at Hauptstrasse 66-68 in Warburg (North Rhine-Westphalia). It had been on the list of architectural monuments in Warburg since 1972 as a monument of supra-regional importance and was canceled in 1980.

Little is known about the origins of the building. The building decoration, designed in the Louis-Seize style , refers to a construction period around 1780, whereby older parts of previous buildings may have been included. The house was therefore one of the few buildings that were erected between the Seven Years' War and the Napoleonic era in the then impoverished city of Warburg and initially served as the home of an agricultural property.

In 1818 the building was sold and converted into a hotel. Despite some changes of ownership, it developed into the leading hotel in the then district town of Warburg. In 1839 the Casino Society Warburg eV was founded there. According to the minutes of the founding meeting, 27 honorable citizens decided that the purpose of the new association was "to provide its members in a circle of educated people with relaxation through the enjoyment of permitted joys of life". The association moved into the ground floor to the left of the entrance and played a leading role in shaping social life in Warburg with exclusive festive events. A large ballroom with a stage was added to the rear. There were winter balls, ladies' parties, men's evenings and lectures by researchers, scientists and artists.

Carl Struve bought the hotel in 1893 and ran it with his family for almost forty years. His "first-class service and hospitality" for guests as well as his ability to captivate guests with "humorously spiced entertainment" were praised. In addition, Struve was chairman of the Warburg warrior association , the landlord's association, the hotel owners association and a member of the presbytery of the Protestant parish . After his death in 1933, the hotel was continued by his descendants. However, since the guests stayed away after the Second World War , some rooms were rented to the Warburger Nahrungsmittelwerke for administrative purposes. In 1957 the Struve family gave up the hotel and catering business, so that the house threatened to close for the first time. A Hotel Zum Desenberg GmbH was founded , which carried out renovation measures in the guest rooms and kept the hotel running for around 20 years. After the catering was closed at the beginning of the 1970s, the ground floor rooms were rented to a neighboring department store as sales space.

In 1975, the Warburg savings and loan fund acquired the building in order to tear it down and build a new bank building in its place. Massive protests by the state conservator and numerous citizens followed, which intensified after the new building plans were published on March 24, 1979. As a compromise solution, the savings and loan fund finally submitted a building application with a reconstruction of the facades. In December 1979, a demolition permit was issued with the condition that the street facades were preserved and the hipped roof restored. In June 1980, however, the building was completely demolished; the reconstruction of the facade promised to the city of Warburg was not carried out.

architecture

In the list of architectural monuments in Warburg, the building was classified in the first category, " Particularly important architectural monuments of supraregional importance, which must be protected " and described as follows: "Stretched massive and plastered eaves construction. Window and door frames made of stone. In the 3rd axis from the left, a solid baroque door jambs with cranked frames, coat of arms in a wedge and standing oval skylight window . Around 1700. Far right passage arch. The remaining window frames probably 1. Dr. 19th century. Bat dormers in the roof . ” .
