The Howell peak is 1750 m high and small peaks in the East Antarctic Victoria Land . In the Usarp Mountains, it looms at the northwest end of the Daniels Range .
The United States Geological Survey mapped it based on its own surveys and using aerial photographs of the United States Navy from 1960 to 1962. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1970 after the meteorologist Kenneth R. Howell, who is responsible for the United States Antarctic Program worked at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station between 1967 and 1968 .
