Hoya coriacea is a plant of the genus of wax flowers ( Hoya ) of the subfamily of asclepiadoideae (Asclepiadoideae).

features

Hoya coriacea is a perennial , epiphytic or terrestrial, climbing plant. The shoots have a diameter of 2 mm, older shoots are slightly woody. Adhesive roots are formed at intervals with which the plant anchors itself to the ground. The leaves are stalked, the mostly curved, thick petioles are up to 1 to 3 cm long and glabrous. The thin, leathery leaf blades are ovate to ovate-oblong or elliptical, and 7 to 15 cm long and 3 to 7 cm wide. They are light green with a shiny, bare upper side, the underside is slightly lighter. The apex is pointed, the base is blunt to rounded. The apex is usually curved downwards. The pinnate leaf veins are clearly visible. The lighter central rib is slightly rutted on the top.

The ball-shaped, hanging inflorescence has a diameter of 8 to 10 cm and contains up to 20 to 40 flowers (35 to 75 individual flowers). The slender inflorescence stalks are 5 to 10 cm long, round in cross section, and somewhat downy hairy or glabrous. The flower stalks are 2.7 to 3.6 cm long and slightly downy hairy. The sepals are hairy on the outside and glabrous on the inside. They measure 4.5 mm in length. The light yellow to cream-colored flowers are 1.5 to 2.5 cm in diameter. The egg-shaped corolla lobes are bent back and densely hairy inside, only the apices of the lobes are bare. On the outside they are covered with fine papillae. They are pointed and at the apex. The whitish secondary crown is spread out in a star shape, the middle is dark brown to purple in color . The tips are ovate and pointed. The top is keeled, the bottom has a deep longitudinal groove. The Pollinia oblong with a transparent outer edge. The corpusculum is wedge-shaped. The elongated, short caudiculae begin above the middle of the corpusculum. The flowers give off a sweet peach scent.

The follicle fruit is spindle-shaped with a warty surface and 10 to 13 cm long.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area of the species extends from Thailand, Malaysia to Indonesia (Borneo, Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi) and the Philippines. The species occurs from the mangrove to the hill country.

Taxonomy

The taxon Hoya coriacea was established by Carl Ludwig Blume in 1827 . The Plants of the World online database accepts Hoya coriacea as a valid taxon. There are currently two subspecies:

  • Hoya coriacea subsp. coriacea
  • Hoya coriacea subsp. philippinensis Kloppenb., Siar & Ferreras (2013)

A more recent synonym of Hoya coriacea subsp. coriacea is Hoya angustisepala Schltr. ex CM Burton (1987). Hoya coriacea Lindl. (1839) is a synonym of Hoya multiflora flower (1823). Hoya coriacea inches. ex Miq. (1857) is a synonym of Hoya diversifolia flower (1827).
