description

Vegetative characteristics

Hoya imperialis is an epiphytic, climbing, perennial herbaceous plant . The up to 6 meter long shoot axes are initially tomentose, later bald. The leaves are about 15 cm long and 5 cm wide, other sources call a length of up to 23 cm oblong-lanceolate and pointed. They can be thin and papery, but they can also be succulent. The leaf margins can be wavy (in the case of the Hoya imperialis var. Rauschi ). They are light green in color with a pronounced midrib.

Generative characteristics

The hanging inflorescence contains only a few flowers (about eight to ten flowers, up to twelve, up to 14). The color of the corolla varies from white, golden yellow, rose, brown-red to purple-red. The corolla lobes are initially strongly bent outwards at the base, they then bend strongly inwards after about a third of the length and form a 30 to 40 ° angle with the flower plane. The flower is thus cup-shaped, the diameter is up to 8 cm (up to 7 cm). The staminale secondary crown is white to ivory in color, occasionally with a slightly pink base. The anthesis lasts up to two weeks. The flowers have little or no scent; in other sources the scent is described as fresh, "similar to gardenias". They secrete a lot of sticky nectar.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

distribution

Hoya imperialis is found in Malaysia , Thailand and the Philippines . The nominate form comes from Borneo .

Systematics

The first description of Hoya imperialis was in 1846 by John Lindley in Edwards's Botanical Register , Volume 32, behind Plate 68. The holotype comes from North Borneo.

Two varieties of Hoya imperialis are currently valid:

  • Hoya imperialis Lindl. var. imperialis
  • Hoya imperialis var. Rauschii E.Regel : It has always wavy leaf margins. The leaves are bigger. The flower color is very variable and ranges from greenish white with pink or purple shades.
