Detail, single flower

Hoya loheri is a species of wax flowers ( Hoya ) from the subfamily of the silk plants (Asclepiadoideae). The species name loheri honors the plant collector and botanist August Loher (1874–1930) (bot. Abbreviation: Loher ).

features

Vegetative characteristics

Hoya loheri has bare, winding and mostly drooping, strongly branching stem axes . The diameter of the more or less round, rust-red shoot axes is about 1 mm. The tightly standing, stiff leaf blades sit on short, up to 1 mm thick petioles. The leaf blades are 4 to 5 cm long and about 2 cm wide. The edges are always strongly bent outwards, mostly they are rolled up into a tube; the underside forms the inside of the tube. The leaf blades are usually upright. The top and bottom are light green, the bottom is slightly lighter and also has red spots.

Generative characteristics

The inflorescence is 10 to 20 flowers . Many inflorescences can be formed at the same time. It is spherical, the flowers are very loose. The stalks of the inflorescences and also the up to 10 cm long flower stalks are colored rusty brown. The orange-red or brown-red corolla is comparatively small and has a diameter of about 5 mm. The petal tips are turned outwards. They are hairy on the inside (only the inside can be seen). The star-shaped secondary crown is colored yellow and red. The leathery corolla lobes have a smooth, shiny surface, are stretched and curled along the longitudinal axis. The flowers produce a lot of nectar. The scent is described as sweet.

Geographical distribution and habitat

Hoya loheri Kloppenb. so far has only been found at Mt Paningtingan, Montalban , Rizal Province and the neighboring Quezon Province on the Philippine island of Luzon .

Taxonomy and nomenclature

Dale Kloppenburg first examined a herbarium specimen in the herbarium of the University of California at Berkeley , which August Loher had collected on March 15, 1915 in Paningtingan , Province of Rizal, on the island of Luzon, Philippines. Only a short time after the first description, Dale Kloppenburg received cuttings from Dexter Heuschkel (Manila).

Hoya loheri as well as the closely related Hoya rizaliana Kloppenb. are assigned to the Acanthostemma (Blume) Kloppenburg section .

The spelling with only an i at the end of the scientific species name, which is unusual for botanical species names at first glance, is correct. The International Code of Botanical Nomenclature provides that the scientific species name of a plant, which is named after a male person and whose last name ends in -er, is formed by adding just an i.

Systematics

One can distinguish between two subspecies:

  • Hoya loheri subsp. loheri : It occurs in the Philippines.
  • Hoya loheri subsp. tanawanensis Kloppenb. & G. Mend. : It also occurs in the Philippines.

Culture

Hoya loheri is comparatively easy to cultivate. Cuttings form roots quickly at temperatures of 20 to 25 ° C. The species needs a lot of water, high humidity and a sunny spot. The substrate should be well drained and occasionally dry out completely.
