Hraniw ( Ukrainian Гранів ; Russian Гранов Granow , Polish Granov ) is a village in the east of the Ukrainian Vinnytsia Oblast with about 2,700 inhabitants (2001).

history

The village, first mentioned in writing under the name Werbytsch in the first quarter of the 15th century, fell to the Polish magnate family Sieniawski in 1605 . At that time the village had 140 houses with 807 inhabitants. In the 18th century a church building was built in the village. In 1775 Hraniw owned 180 buildings and in 1923 the place had 2,434 farmsteads with a total of 6,779 inhabitants. From July 27, 1941 to March 12, 1944, the village was occupied by the Wehrmacht .

geography

Hraniw is the only village in the district of the same name in the east of Hajssyn Rajon . The village is located on the banks of Werbytsch (Ukrainian Вербич ), a 19 km long left tributary of the Sob (Ukrainian Соб ; river system Southern Bug ), 18 km north-east from Rajonzentrum Haisyn and 110 km southeast of the Oblastzentrum Vinnytsia . The M 12 / E 50 trunk road runs five kilometers south of the village .
