Hryhory Lakota , also Gregor Lakota , ( Ukrainian : Григорій Лакота , Polish : Grzegorz Łakota ; born January 31, 1883 in Holodivka near Lemberg ; † November 12, 1950 in Vorkuta , Soviet Union ) was auxiliary bishop of the Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church in Przemyśl . He was proclaimed a martyr and blessed on June 27, 2001 by Pope John Paul II .

Life

Hryhorij Lakota studied theology in Lviv and was ordained a priest in 1908. In 1911 he received his doctorate in theology from the University of Vienna . Since 1913 he taught at the seminary in Przemyśl and also became its rector. On February 10, 1926 he was appointed auxiliary bishop in the Ruthenian eparchy Przemyśl and appointed titular bishop of Daonium . Archbishop Andrej Scheptyzkyj von Lemberg consecrated him on May 16, 1926 as bishop.

Martyrdom and Beatification

Bishop Lakota was captured by Soviet rulers on June 9, 1946 and sentenced to 10 years in prison. His captivity began in Abez labor camp near the northern Russian city of Vorkuta . He died in this prison camp on November 12, 1950. Pope John Paul II beatified Hryhorij Lakota and twenty-four other martyrs. The common ecclesiastical day of remembrance was set for April 2nd, the day of the death of Blessed Mykolay Tarnezkyj .
