Hualpén is a city in the South American Andean state of Chile and is located in the Concepción agglomeration of the Provincia de Concepción of the Bío-Bío region .

The community was created in 2004 through a spin-off from Talcahuano . The area is 53.50 km², the population is 91,773. There is an oil refinery owned by the Empresa Nacional del Petróleo (ENAP).

The community is divided into an industrial area near and on the Pacific Ocean and residential areas with names such as Colón 9000, René Schneider, La Floresta, Críspulo Gándara, and many others.

The touristic points of interest in Hualpén are the Cerro Amarillo and especially the Península de Hualpén peninsula with its Pedro del Río Zañartu park, which is equipped with a museum and collectibles from all over the world (e.g. pipes from Tyrol, an Egyptian mummy) exhibits. The Desembocadura, where the largest river in Chile, the Bio Bio, flows into the Pacific, mainly attracts hobby fishermen, kitesurfers and normal surfers and the "Penquistas - inhabitants of Concepción", tired of civilization. The entire peninsula is also a magnet for mountain bikers.

On the peninsula of Hualpén there is also a former whaling town called Chome, whose factory ruins are still standing today. Nowadays fishermen live in the village and there is a primary school. Between October and December herds of whales move south off the coast and sea lions and dolphins live around the town. Near Chome is the bay of Ramuntcho, reminiscent of a white Caribbean beach, whose caves attract divers.
