particularities
  • Leica double camera (P20) or Leica triple camera with optical telephoto (P20 Pro)
  • IP67 certified (P20 Pro only)

On March 26, 2018, Huawei introduced the P20 smartphone family with great media effort (live direct transmission via Internet livestream) . It comprises the high-end device P20 Pro, the upper-class P20 and the mid-range P20 lite. The design with the notch in the display is clearly based on the current generation of Apple devices, whereby the equipment is also to be understood as a challenge to Apple and Samsung. Upon delivery, the smartphones are based on the Android 8.1 Oreo operating system with Huawei's own EMUI 8.1 user interface.

Technical data P20

design

The Huawei P20 consists of a glass plate on the front and back, which are held together by an aluminum frame. Only the P20 Pro is waterproof in terms of IP67. On the P20 and P20 Pro, the fingerprint scanner is on the front and allows quick unlocking; it can also be used instead of on-screen buttons. The fingerprint sensor of the P20 lite, on the other hand, is on the back.

Display

The Huawei P20 has a 5.8-inch TFT display in 18: 9 format with a resolution of 2240 × 1080 px, i.e. slightly wider than Full HD . The P20 Pro has an OLED display with a size of 6 "but the same resolution.

camera

The Huawei P20 uses a Leica camera equipped with a 12 MP color sensor and a 20 MP monochrome sensor. Color and monochrome sensor data are combined to improve image detail and dynamic range while reducing noise levels. The aperture values are 1.8 for the RGB sensor and 1.6 for the black and white sensor - the latter is therefore significantly more light-sensitive than the main camera due to a larger aperture and the absence of the color filter in front of the subpixels. Only the color sensor has optical image stabilization. Further features of the camera are the laser-assisted autofocus, a two-color LED flash and 4K video recording with 3840 × 2160 px and 30 fps.

P20 lite

  • Display: 5.84 "IPS LCD with 2,280 × 1,080 pixels in 19: 9 format;
  • Processor: Octa-core CPU Kirin 659 with 4 × 2.36 GHz and 4 × 1.7 GHz;
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM, 64 GB internal program memory, expandable by microSD memory card to max. 256 GB;
  • Cameras: 16 and 2 MP main camera (f / 2.2 and f / 2.4), 16 MP front camera (f / 2.0);
  • Battery: 3000 mAh (standby 545 h, talk time 16 h);
  • Dimensions and weight: 148.6 × 71.2 × 7.45 mm, 145 g

P20 Pro

The top model of the trio not only has a 4000 mAh battery and a waterproof housing according to IP67, but is also the first smartphone to have an optical telephoto focal length of 85 mm KB equivalent. This is achieved when using a lens with f / 2.4 / 2.4 mm focal length by using an 8 MP sensor. These optics are image stabilized, but only allow recordings in JPEG mode, not as RAW files.

The main camera delivers RAW images in JPEG and DNG format with 40 MP resolution and an f / 1.8 / 3.95 mm lens. The sensor size is 1 / 1.7 inches and thus corresponds to the image converter chips that can also be found in compact cameras. Due to the special arrangement of the color filters over the sensor pixels, which corresponds to a coarse Bayer matrix, so to speak, four subpixels of one color can be interconnected; Huawei calls this "light fusion". The resolution drops to 10 MP, but light sensitivity and noise reduction increase dramatically (with a reduced color resolution).

The lens trio is complemented by a monochrome module with f / 2.4 / 2.4 mm lens and 20 MP resolution. This system also only records JPEG, not DNG, files for b / w recordings. The raw data files are therefore obtained exclusively from the 40 MP main camera, but depending on the recording program, supplemented by image information from the remaining camera modules.

The P20 Pro's camera scored 109 points in the DxOMark Mobile test, making it the best mobile phone camera ever measured there. Values were measured well above any other mobile phone camera, especially when taking photos or in poor lighting conditions.
