On October 12, 1977 he finished his studies there and received the biological intermediate diploma , then he continued his studies at the University of Göttingen , where he concentrated on microbiology. He received his diploma in biology on November 27, 1980 based on his paper Cell Yields and Fermentation Products in the Growth of Clostridium Acetobutylicum in Continuous Culture , his major was microbiology, minor subjects were biochemistry and organic chemistry . He was looked after by Gerhard Gottschalk . But He graduated in 1983 from, because on April 28, he became the Doctor of Science in these subjects doctorate . His dissertation, Continuous Acetone-Butanol Fermentation by Clostridium acetobutylicum, was also written under the supervision of Gottschalk.

As a result, Bahl worked as a research assistant at the university's microbiological institute until August 1984 . By October 1986, he was finally a postdoctoral fellow and fellow of the German Research Foundation at the University of Berkeley . He then returned to the microbiological institute in Göttingen in November, initially as a research assistant, then as an academic adviser , university and research assistant.

After the university had qualified him for microbiology on June 23, 1992 with his work Gene structure and expression in Clostridia: Heat shock response in Clostridium acetobutylicum and substrate utilization in Clostridium thermosulfurogenes , he worked as a lecturer since October 30 . On 1 April 1996 finally appointed him Rostock University for Professor on the Chair for general and special microbiology.

At the university, Bahl joined both the council and the faculty council in 1998 . He has been a member of the faculty council since 2000 and resigned from the council in 2002, becoming the department spokesperson, which he held for two years. He has been Deputy Director at the Biosciences Institute since 2007.

Bahl has been a member of the Association for General and Applied Microbiology since 1986, and has been its secretary since 1998. In 1987 he joined the German Society for Hygiene and Microbiology and received its sponsorship award, another two years later he was accepted into the American Society for Microbiology . Bahl was on the Editorial Board of Applied and Environmental Microbiology from 1994 to 2002, and from 1998 he has been on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Basic Microbiology .

Bahl is married to Birgit Piechulla-Bahl , who is also a professor in Rostock. They have two sons and a daughter.
