Hubert Breitschaft (born November 11, 1903 in Wetterfeld / Upper Palatinate ; † December 12, 1944 in Hanover ) was a German soldier and a victim of National Socialism .

Life

Hubert Breitschaft was married and had two children. As a teacher in Grafenkirchen , he was already critical of National Socialism and the " Hitler salute " in 1934 . In 1937 he joined the NSDAP as the last teacher in his district . In 1939 at the beginning of the Second World War he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and in 1944 stayed in Romania as a member of the 6th Army . When the report was received regarding the assassination attempt of July 20, 1944 on Adolf Hitler , Breitschaft said in Ismajilspontaneously to another soldier that he regretted that Hitler was not killed in the assassination attempt. In addition, he said about Hitler:

“It's a shame it didn't get him! The guy has already caused misery to too many. "

The field post secretary denounced Breitschaft in a crime report to Breitschaft's superiors. Breitschaft was thereupon sentenced to death on August 2, 1944 in Bolgrad in Romania by a field court for undermining military strength . Two appeals for clemency were rejected. Breitschaft was imprisoned in the Wehrmacht remand prison on Waterlooplatz in Hanover. On December 12, 1944, he was executed on the shooting range of the Wehrmacht barracks in Vahrenheide near Hanover . The area at the Kugelfangtrift served the Nazi military justice as a place of execution for the execution of the death penalty on soldiers and is now part of the Hauptfeldwebel-Lagenstein barracks . Breitschaft was buried in the "Limmer Military Cemetery", today 's Fosselfeld district cemetery. The cemetery served, among other things, as a burial place for executed soldiers.

The case of Hubert Breitschaft is shown on an information board in the cemetery. He is an example for the 43 buried in the cemetery soldiers as victims of military justice in the era of National Socialism . The names of 46 executed victims of Nazi military justice who were buried in the cemetery are now known. The information board is located in the area of the 2015 “Disobedience 1939–1945” monument by Almut and Hans-Jürgen Breuste to commemorate deserters of the Wehrmacht.

Hubert Breitschaft's biography was included in teaching material sponsored by the city of Hanover , which is intended for use in school lessons. In it, students are encouraged to think about Nazi military justice and their personal fate based on their biography.
