Hubert Dopf

Hubert Dopf SJ (born July 30, 1921 in Stadl-Paura , Upper Austria ; † October 26, 2015 in Linz ) was an Austrian Jesuit and musicologist. Dopf was known as the "doyen of Gregorian chants" in Austria.

Life

Hubert Dopf joined the order of the Society of Jesus in 1939 after attending the Linz Episcopal Gymnasium Petrinum (Kollegium Petrinum) and graduating from the Gymnasium in Ried im Innkreis . In 1941 he was drafted into the military as a novice, shortly afterwards he was released again. He first studied philosophy at the Jesuit Berchmanskolleg in Pullach and then church music in Vienna and theology in Innsbruck, where he was ordained priest in 1950. After completing a doctorate in musicology, he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD.

In 1954/55 he made the Jesuit tertiary in Sankt Andrä in Carinthia . This was followed by the teaching examination for religion and from 1955 to 1963 teaching activity at the college in Kalksburg .

From 1966 to 1986 Dopf was full professor of church music and professor of Gregorian chant at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . In addition, from 1973 to 1995 he was artistic director and conductor of the Choral-Schola of the Vienna Hofburg Chapel .

Hubert Dopf was internationally recognized as a recognized interpreter of Gregorian chants and composer of liturgical chants and chants; he was committed to the Musica Sacra . In 1997 he was the editor of the six-part CD series "Gregorian chant for the church year" (Philips Classics).
