The Hubertus Bräu brewery is a private brewery in Laa an der Thaya in Lower Austria. The right to brew this brewery dates back to 1454, making the brewery one of the oldest in Austria.
Brewery in the city of Laa
The city of Laa received the original brewing rights from the Duke of Austria, Ladislaus Postumus . For this, the citizens of the city had to deliver him a keg of beer for each holiday. The brewing rights were leased from the city until 1847. When the brewery was in economic trouble, the city tried to sell the brewery. Since no other buyers could be found, the then mayor of Laa, Anton Kühtreiber, bought both the brewing rights and the brewery. Since then, the family has been leading the brewing tradition in the sixth generation. In 1978 a new fermentation and storage cellar and in 1986 a new brewhouse were put into operation.
beer
The very soft water that is necessary for the brewery is obtained from the in-house well in Laa city area from a depth of 238 m. Hops are sourced from Saaz in the Czech Republic and Upper Austria, the malt from Burgenland and Lower Austria.
While the brewery also delivered to the crown lands up to the First World War , this market collapsed with the collapse of the monarchy. Today the main sales area is the Weinviertel and Waldviertel as far as Vienna . For this reason there are still several satellite camps in these areas.

Mineral water
In the second half of the 20th century, a second deep well was drilled nearby, in addition to the existing one, which despite the same depth provides hard water. This source is artesian , so there is no need to pump. It is dedicated to the city saint, who is also the patron saint of beer brewers, St. Vitus . This water was recognized as mineral water in the 1970s and is marketed both as pure mineral water and with flavorings as lemonades, also under the name Vitus .
Others
The brewery is a member of the Brauring , a cooperation between private breweries from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
