Hubertus Hitschhold (born July 7, 1912 in Kurwien ; † March 10, 1966 in Söcking ) was a German officer , most recently major general in World War II and a " Stuka " pilot in the German Air Force .

Early career

Immediately after graduating from high school, Hitschhold joined the Reichswehr on April 1, 1930 and acquired his flight tickets in March 1931. He then received further training as a fighter pilot in Lipezk, Russia , and was transferred to the 2nd (Prussian) cavalry regiment on October 1, 1931 . In 1935 he joined the newly founded air force and in 1937, after acquiring his military license, first joined the I. Group of Stuka Wing 163, shortly afterwards he became a squadron captain in I. Group of Stuka Wing 2 Immelmann.

Second World War

With his squadron he already took part in the attack on Poland , promoted to captain , on October 1, 1939, he took over command of the entire I. Group. Due to the achievements of his group in the western campaign , he was promoted to major on July 19, 1940 and shortly thereafter awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on July 21, 1940 on behalf of the entire group . He then took part with his group in the Battle of Britain , the Balkan campaign and the Merkur operation before they were relocated to the Eastern Front in June 1941 as part of the Barbarossa operation.

On the very first day, June 22, 1941, enemy flak fire forced his Ju 87 to make an emergency landing behind enemy lines. The captain of the 3rd season, Lieutenant Friday, was able to land next to Hitschhold's machine, record him and his radio operator and thus prevent their capture.

On October 16, 1941, Hitschhold was given command of the dive fighter school 1 in Wertheim , and on December 31, 1941, he was awarded the oak leaves. On June 18, 1942, he was transferred back to the front as commander of the battle squadron 1, where he was in charge of converting the squadron from the Ju 87 aircraft to the more modern Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighter-bombers . On June 10, 1943, Hitschhold handed over the command to Lieutenant Colonel Alfred Druschel and took over the role of the pilot of the Luftflotte 2 , on November 6, 1943 he became General of the Attack Airmen as successor to the late Ernst Kupfer .
