Hubertus Spiekermann

Hubertus Spiekermann (born February 19, 1942 in Menden ; † September 30, 2009 in Haan ) was a German doctor, dentist and university professor who scientifically co-founded dental implantology .

Life

Hubertus Spiekermann lived privately on a rural property in Haan, where he raised bees, ducks, geese, chickens, sheep and special cattle.

Professional career

Spiekermann first studied geodesy in Bonn and then from 1962 to 1970 medicine and dentistry at the Universities of Münster, Vienna and Düsseldorf. In Düsseldorf he passed both state examinations, received both approvals and a doctorate in both subject areas.

After completing his studies, he was taken on as a scientific assistant from 1970 to 1977 and then until 1979 as chief senior physician in the department for prosthetics and defect prosthetics (director Hermann Böttger) at the West German jaw clinic in Düsseldorf. In the 1970s he was also a guest assistant at the Dental School, Gy's Hospital, London (Director Jones) and guest assistant at the Prosthetic Department of the University of Zurich (Head of Gerber).

After his habilitation in 1978 for the subject of dentistry, oral and maxillofacial medicine with the subject "Endosseous implants in dentistry - Clinical experience and animal experiments." In 1979, Spiekermann received a call to the chair for dental prosthetics and materials science at the Ruhr- University of Bochum . A year later, he accepted the chair for dental prosthetics and materials science at the Aachen University Hospital of RWTH Aachen University , where he worked and taught until his retirement in 2007.

In the 1980s Spiekermann was visiting professor at Harvard Dental School, Boston, USA and in the 1990s visiting professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, USA (UCLA).

Spiekermann was 1st chairman of the working group (AG) on implantology in the German Society for Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine (DGZMK) until the AG Implantology was merged in the DGZMK and the Society for Oral Implantology to form the German Society for Implantology (DGI). He was then President of the DGI from 1996 to 1998. In addition, around 1998 he was President of the European Academy of Osseointegration (EAO) and from 2000 to 2002 the 1st Chairman of the German Society for Dental Prosthetics and Materials Science (DGZPW, today DG-Pro). He was also a reviewer and senior reviewer for the German Research Foundation (DFG).

From 1981 to 1989 Spiekermann was the German editor-in-chief of the "International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry". From 1985 until at least 2002 Hubertus Spiekermann was co-editor of the "Zeitschrift für Zahnärztliche Implantologie".
