Hubertus von Gall

Hubertus Freiherr von Gall (born May 26, 1935 in Gießen ; † April 8, 2018 in Berlin ) was a German classical and Near Eastern archaeologist .

Hubertus von Gall studied 1955-1963 Classical Archeology , Prehistory and Early History and Ancient History at the universities of Frankfurt and Mainz . In Mainz he received his doctorate in 1963 with a thesis on rock graves in Paphlagonia under Frank Brommer . He then received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute in 1964/65 . From 1965 to 1969 he worked at the headquarters of the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin, and from 1971 until his retirement in the Tehran department of the German Archaeological Institute.

His main research area was the archeology of the Persians , Parthians , Medes and Sassanids . Most recently he worked on classical references in the art of the Qajar era in Persia.

He died in Berlin-Charlottenberg in 2018 at the age of 82 .
