Hubertus Cross

Hubertus Cross

The Hubertuskreuz is located directly on Landstrasse 228 , which connects Linnich with Lindern . It was built in 1776 as a reminder of the battle of Linnich between the Duchy of Geldern and the Duchy of Jülich-Berg , which raged on November 3, 1444 in this field.

Exactly 500 years later, on November 22nd, 1944, during the Second World War , a tank battle took place at the same location, during which the Hubertus Cross suffered damage that is still visible today.

To commemorate this battle, veterans of the warring factions of the time meet each year in November to lay a wreath. A memorial stone also commemorates those who died in this battle. The inscription is badly weathered and hardly legible. The name comes from St. Hubertus of Liège , to whom the cross is dedicated. The Hubertus Battle is named after the day on which it took place; it was November 3rd, the name day of St. Hubertus. Out of gratitude for the victory, Duke Gerhard (Jülich-Berg) donated the Hubertus Order, which is awarded to our days - today as the House Order of those of Wittelsbach .
