Huemul Island ( Spanish Islote Huemul , in the United Kingdom Megaptera Island ) is a small island in the Palmer Archipelago off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located off the north end of Trinity Island .
Participants of the Fifth French Antarctic Expedition (1908-1910) under the direction of polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot mapped them. It was named during the 1st Chilean Antarctic Expedition (1946–1947). It is named after the Andean deer ( Huemul in Spanish ), which is also shown in the coat of arms of Chile . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names converted this designation into English in 1965. The namesake of the name made by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1960, however, is the humpback whale ( Latin Megaptera novaeangliae ).
