Río Huerva near Muel

The Río Huerva is an approx. 128 km long southern tributary of the Ebro . It flows through parts of the provinces of Teruel and Saragossa in the autonomous region of Aragon in northeastern Spain .

The Río Huerva rises in the Sierra de Cucalón about 1 km north of the town of Fonfría near the northern border of the province of Teruel . From there it flows in a predominantly north-easterly direction through the south of the province of Saragossa before finally flowing into the Ebro in the city of Saragossa .

Tributaries and reservoirs

The Río Huerva has no major tributaries; it is jammed twice:

  • Embalse de las Torcas (max. Surface 77 ha; completion 1946) on the territory of the municipality of Tosos
  • Embalse de Mezalocha (max. Surface 41 ha; completion 1731 and 1906) on the territory of the municipality of Mezalocha

Especially in the late Middle Ages, the area between the kingdoms of Castile and Aragón was disputed " ( Guerra de los Dos Pedros ) ". Several castle ruins (castillos) date from this time .
