Hugh E. DeWitt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hugh Edgar DeWitt (born May 29, 1930 in Memphis, Tennessee , † March 28, 2014 in Berkeley ) was an American physicist who worked in the field of plasma physics .

Life

Hugh E. DeWitt studied at Stanford University and received his doctorate in 1957 from Cornell University with a thesis on nuclear physics (Effects of Dynamical Correlations on the Nuclear Photoeffect) . From 1957 to 1996 he worked at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory . This activity was interrupted by visiting professorships in Madras 1963-1964 and at the University of Iowa 1970-1971.

At the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, he conducted research in the field of theory and numerical simulation of strongly coupled Coulomb systems. He made significant contributions to the explanation of the thermodynamic and transport properties of strongly coupled plasmas, which are important for understanding the properties of white dwarfs and neutron star crusts.

DeWitt was a Fellow of the American Physical Society and, since 1990, the American Association for the Advancement of Science .
