Live and act

Elles was the son of General Edmond Elles . He completed his school years at Clifford College ( Bristol ) and then joined the Royal Military Academy Woolwich in London as a cadet .

During the First World War, Elles was in the rank of brigadier general, commanding general of the British Royal Tank Corps, so named since June 1917, and, together with his staff officer Lieutenant Colonel JFC Fuller and the artillery general Henry Hugh Tudor, drafted the plan for the first tank battle in history, the Battle of Cambrai ( November 20, 1917).

The aim of the plan was, on a quiet section of the western front, which was better suited for tanks due to its solid chalk soil than the boggy soil of Flanders, through the massed use of tanks (approx. 400 in total) the triple staggered trench system of the German Hindenburg line break through and immediately advance through the gap with infantry and cavalry.

After the war, Elles became inspector of the armored forces in 1923 and Master General of the Ordnance from 1934 to 1937 . In 1938 he retired from active service.
