Sir Hugh Elliott, 3rd Baronet

Sir Hugh Francis Ivo Elliott, 3rd Baronet OBE (born March 10, 1913 in Allahabad , India , † December 21, 1989 in Oxford , United Kingdom ) was a British ornithologist and administrator of Tristan da Cunha .

Life

Hugh Elliott was the son of Sir Ivo Elliott, 2nd Baronet. After the completion of the Dragon School and Eastbourne College he was a graduate of University College in Oxford . In 1937 Elliott worked in the Tanganyika administration . From January 31, 1950 to October 30, 1952, he was the first administrator of Tristan da Cunha. From 1958 to 1961 he was secretary in the Tanganyika Ministry of Natural Resources. In 1961, on the death of his father, he inherited his title of baronet , of Limpsfield in the County of Surrey . From 1961 to 1966 he was the Commonwealth's liaison officer to the IUCN . From 1974 to 1975 he was editor of the Bulletin of the British Ornithologists 'Club and from 1975 to 1979 he was President of the British Ornithologists' Union .

From 1963 to 1966 Elliott was Secretary General of the IUCN. For this organization he published several articles including IUCN's Twelfth Technical Meeting. Douzieme reunion technique de L'UICN. Banff, Alberta, Canada. 12 to 15 September 1972 . (= IUCN Publications New Series No. 28). (1973) and Second World Conference on National Parks, (Yellowstone & Grand Teton, 1972) (1974). One of his best-known works is The Herons of the World , which he wrote in 1978 with James A. Hancock (1921-2004).

From his 1939 marriage to Elizabeth Phillipson, he had two daughters and his son and heir to the title, Sir Clive Elliott, 4th Baronet (1945-2018).
