Hughes & Kettner ATS 100

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ATS 100 is a guitar amplifier from Hughes & Kettner . It was produced from 1988 and was the first of this company in hybrid construction. The use of tubes in the preamp and transistors in the output stage set the trend. In earlier hybrid amplifiers, the distribution was reversed. The construction of the ATS 100 has the advantage, especially with distorted sounds, that it comes close to the all-tube amplifiers in terms of quality - in contrast to pure transistor amplifiers, which are often frowned upon by guitarists for their "cold" sound - but at the same time offer the greatest advantages of transistor amplifiers lower weight and cheaper production.

technology

The ATS 100 is equipped with two channels: a clean channel for clean, clear sounds and a tube channel that uses tube technology to produce distorted sounds.

Clean channel

The clean channel is designed in a typical transistor circuit. In addition, this channel has a built-in compressor , which is regulated by the volume controller of the channel and an additional button.

Tube channel

With this hybrid circuit in the ATS 100, one tube generates the sound characteristics of the preamplifier and another tube the sound characteristics of the power amplifier , with the actual amplification of the guitar signal for both channels being provided by a transistor amplifier in a MOSFET circuit. In this way, typical output stage distortions can be implemented using a tube circuit - even at low volumes .

The pre-stage can also be overridden by a booster . The channel is also supplemented by an equalizer circuit , similar to the Mark IV from Mesa / Boogie .

Others

Both channels have their own volume and reverb controls. With the latter, the reverb portion of the built-in spring reverb spiral is regulated. The overall volume is regulated by a cross-channel volume controller.

Other guitar amplifier manufacturers follow the principle of the hybrid circuit of tube (s) for sound generation and transistor output stage for amplification, such as Marshall with his Valvestate series.

Models

The amplifier has both a 100- watt - Combo - with a 12 " guitar speaker offered as well as a 100-watt head, the body showed the typical time for Hughes & Kettner dark blue and robust flocking..
